On February 8, 2024, Vornado issued a recall that includes the Vornado, Steamfast, and Sharper Image-branded handheld garment steamers. The recall, number 24-109, affects approximately 2 million units of the handheld steamers. According to the recall, the steamers can expel hot water from the steam nozzle while heating or during use; this poses a significant burn risk to consumers.
The recall affects the following products (the model numbers are included):
- Steamfast (model numbers SF-425, SF-435, SF-440, SF-445, and SF-447)
- Vornado (model number VS-410)
- Sharper Image (model number SI-428)
The handheld steamers were available in multiple colors. The Steamfast SF-435 were available in white, black, light pink, hot pink, safe green, teal blue, and orange. The Steamfast SF-425, SF-440, SF-445, and SF-447 and the Sharper Image SI-428 were all available in white. The Vornado VS-410 was available in black. The product brand name is found on the side of the units. There is a label on the bottom of the steamers with the model number.
The products were available at Walmart, Bed Bath & Beyond, and other stores as well as online via Vornado.com, sihomecomfort.com, Steamfast.com, and other websites from July 2009 to January 2024; they were sold for between $14 and $35.
So far, there have been 122 reports of hot water spraying/spitting from the nozzle; this includes 23 reports of burn injuries.
The company is urging affected consumers to stop using the recalled steamers and contact them for a full refund or a free replacement product.
