U.S. NHTSA Investigates Faulty Flange Which Can Cause Gas Leaks | 8-4-2017
U.S. safety regulators and automakers are on the hunt for gas tank flanges that can crack and create fuel leaks on what potentially be millions of cars and trucks around the country.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) started the investigation of these parts which are manufactured by German supplier “Continental Automotive GmbH” after the company filed for an abundance of recall documents in early July, 2017, stating that the parts may be defective.
The documents which were filed say that that Continental sold the defective flanges to eleven automakers and five other parts supply companies. Many car manufacturers have already recalled over half-a-million vehicles because of their leaky flanges, which cover the orifice in the fuel tank for the fuel pump, including Audi, Porsche, and Volkswagen. The flanges which can crack and leak fuel can readily start fires.
With other automakers possibly involved, there are potentially millions of cars that may be defective and pose a real threat to the public if the fuel is to catch fire.
