Fatal Street Takeover Crash in Compton Raises Concerns
Street takeovers have become a major issue in our community. These takeovers are typically planned on social media platforms. They occur in different intersections normally during the night. One of the most recent takeovers had fatal consequences. The incident occurred at the intersection of North Wilmington Avenue and West Stockwell Street in Compton at around 11:42pm on Sunday, June 12, 2022. According to the LA County Sheriff’s Department (LASD), two females were pronounced dead at the scene.
According to initial witness accounts, the two females were in a red sedan (a Honda Civic) drifting/swinging in the intersection during a street takeover. One of the females was allegedly hanging out of the window when the crash with a silver SUV occurred. Both females, the driver and the passenger of the red sedan were killed. The passenger, who was hanging out of the window, was ejected from the vehicle.
The driver of the SUV did not suffer serious injuries. According to his account, he had a green light to enter the intersection and did so at around 45 to 50 miles per hour.
According to residents, these illegal street takeovers have been happening regularly for over a year – the larger ones, with hundreds of people, happening at least twice a week. Residents have repeatedly complained and called authorities regarding the takeovers with no avail.
This is not the first fatal incident arising from an illegal street takeover, and it will definitely not be the last. Many members of the community, including family of injured and deceased victims, are blaming both the authorities and the city for failing to do anything to put an end to these street takeovers. In some cases, the authorities and the city can be found liable and can be sued.

What Do These Street Takeovers Consist Of?
During street takeovers, people show up at the designated intersection at the same time (normally blocking traffic from all directions). The cars participating in the takeover perform dangerous maneuvers, including drifting and donuts, in front of crowds. In some cases, the cars get too close and actually strike people in the crowds. When cars are performing dangerous maneuvers at the same time, collisions are likely. Of course, collisions can also involve unsuspecting drivers that are not involved in the takeover in any way.
Street Takeover Car Crash Injuries
In most cases, the drivers and passengers participating in the street takeovers do not wear seatbelts. Many people also sit on the door frame with the window down, which results in their upper body being out of the vehicle while dangerous stunts are being performed. This recklessness is often encouraged and applauded by crowds. Unfortunately, this can lead to devastating injuries when crashes occur.
Some potential injuries are listed below:
- Head injuries
- Traumatic brain injuries
- Neck injuries
- Back injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
- Crushing injuries
- Severed limbs
- Nerve damage
- Fractures
- Lacerations
- Impaling injuries
Of course, these injuries can cause disabling harm and can even be fatal.
Understanding Liability
Who is liable for the harm caused by these dangerous street takeovers? Of course, the organizers and the people participating in the takeovers can be liable and be held accountable for any harm resulting from their actions – and general disregard for the safety of others. However, liability doesn’t end there.
Many people, including those that have been impacted by the constant illegal takeovers in their neighborhood, have been injured as a result of these takeovers, or have lost a loved one to these takeovers, blame the local authorities and the city for not taking action and not doing enough to prevent them from happening.
Can the authorities really be liable? Yes – even though there are constant calls and reports about the street takeovers (with exact locations), the police fail to respond entirely. The authorities simply have not done enough to stop these dangerous street takeovers and keep communities safe.
Can the city be liable? Yes – the city could be liable. This liability is based on the fact that the city has the duty to keep road conditions safe. Recurring incidents, like street takeovers, are grounds for the city to take action to prevent or reduce the risk of further incidents. Some possible actions include installing center dividers, installing speed bumps/humps, installing traffic cameras, etc.
So, can you sue? Yes – you could have grounds to sue for any harm resulting from a street takeover.
