On September 30, 2020, Petzl America issued a recall for their Low-Stretch Kernmantle Ropes. According to the recall, number 20-194, the rope can have a deep cut or tape securing the two ends of the rope together; this can cause the rope to fail. This represents a significant fall and injury risk to consumers. The recall has affected approximately 14,850 products in the U.S.
The recalled ropes include the following:

The Top 9.8mm and Lead 9.8mm ropes are also included in the recall, but they were not available for purchase in North America.
The affected ropes are designed for professional use (including working-at-height, difficult access, technical rescue, and industrial applications) as well as for recreational use (including climbing, mountaineering, and caving, for example). The ropes consist of a nylon core as well as polyester sheath material. Only the ropes with serial numbers ranging between 18 C 0000000 000 and 20 H 0000000 000 are affected. The model names and serial numbers can be found on a label that it attached to each end of the rope.
The recalled ropers were available at Karst Sports, GME Supply, as well as other recreational and industrial stores nationwide (and online via gmesupply.com and Karstsports.com); they were sold for prices ranging from $200 to $1,200. The ropes were available from March 2018 through July 2020.
According to the company, no incidents or injuries have been reported.
The company is urging consumers affected by the recall to immediately stop using the recalled ropes and inspect it for either a deep cut or a tape connecting two ends of the rope together. If either a deep cut or a tape is found, consumers should contact the company for further instructions on receiving a free replacement product.

If you or a member of your family suffered harm associated with the defective product, you should not even consider agreeing to a free replacement; rather, you should explore the options available to you.

The Danger Associated with the Recalled Product
As explained above, the rope can have a deep cut or a tape securing two ends of the rope together; this can potentially cause the rope to fail, which represents a fall and injury risk to consumers. If the rope fails during use, anyone who is using the rope for professional use as well as recreational use can fall and suffer a number of injuries. Victims could suffer different types of injuries, including some of the following: traumatic brain injuries; head injuries; neck injuries; back injuries; spinal cord injuries; hip injuries; fractures; nerve injuries; ligament injuries; muscle injuries; tendon injuries; sprains and strains; scrapes and bruises; dislocations. Depending on the details surrounding the incident, some of the injuries could cause permanent harm. Some of the injuries could even be fatal.
Regardless of the harm that you or a member of your family suffered as a direct result of the defective product, you should remember that the harm suffered could have been completely avoided if the product had not been defective. If you or a member of your family suffered harm, you should explore the legal options available to you.
Product Liability – You Have the Right to Sue
Based on the concept of product liability, you could sue for the harm that you or a member of your family suffered. This is because companies owe their consumers a duty of care. In other words, companies have the duty to ensure that their products are completely safe for their consumers to use. They must inspect their products and subject them to testing to be able to identify and address any hazards present before releasing them to the public. When companies fail to do this, they are breaching their duty of care and putting their consumers at risk of suffering harm. An incident could ensue (i.e. the rope failing) which could directly lead to harm. When a consumer suffers harm as a direct result of a breached duty of care, affected victims could hold the company accountable. This means that consumers could sue. Would you like to learn more about your right to file a product liability claim against Petzl America? If so, do not hesitate to seek legal assistance with the experts at our firm as soon as possible.
What Should You Do?
After being harmed by a defective product, there are a number of things that you should do to ensure that you can hold the negligent company accountable for the harm that you or a member of your family suffered. Consider some of the recommendations that affected consumers should follow:
- Seek medical assistance as soon as possible
- Take photos of all injuries resulting from the incident
- Take photos of the defective product
- Take photos of the entire scene of the incident
- Contact the company to report the defective product, the incident, and the harm suffered
- Do not agree to a refund
- Do not agree to a free repair
- Do not agree to a free replacement
- Do not agree to return the defective product
- Speak to all witnesses
- Gather any video footage that captured the incident (such as body-cam footage, for example)
- Gather all medical records
- Gather all records associated with the purchase of the defective product
- Gather any records associated with lost income associated with the incident
- Seek the legal assistance of a product liability lawyer as soon as possible

Is there a Class Action Lawsuit?
Can I file a class action lawsuit? How can I join or be a part of a class action lawsuit on this case? If the defective product harmed many parties, then it is likely that there is a class action claim in which you could participate. A class action lawyer can help you figure out how to join the specific class action lawsuit. In some cases, there might be mass torts rather than a class action lawsuit – mass torts are single claims against the same company. For more information about how to proceed with your claim, do not hesitate to contact our recall lawyers as soon as possible.
File Your Claim Quickly
Are you considering the possibility of pursuing a product liability claim for the harm that you or a member of your family suffered due to the defective product? If so, it is essential that you act quickly – as your claim is subject to a strict deadline. The applicable deadline is determined by the statute of limitations. If you fail to file your claim within the time allowed by the statute of limitations, you could lose your right to sue entirely. How long do you have to pursue your claim? In California, product liability claims are normally subject to a two-year deadline; this means that claimants only have two years to pursue their claims. Although this strict deadline applies, exceptions could also apply – exceptions that could toll the statute of limitations. To ensure that you have a thorough understanding of the total length of time that you have to pursue your claim, contact the experts at our firm at your earliest convenience.
