On September 9, 2021, Ivena issued a recall for their Teak shower benches. According to the recall, number 21-780, the shower bench can potentially collapse during use; this poses a fall risk to users. The recall has affected approximately 70,000 units of the product.
The recall specifically involves the 20” shower benches, which are made of teak with padding on the feet (the benches are light brown). Both the seat and bottom shelf have wood paneling. The item can be identified by item number 1049998 as well as UPC 8886474018015 (which are printed on the product packaging).
According to the recall, there have been at least 81 reports of the shower benches either breaking, falling apart, or collapsing during use. This includes at least 4 reports of injuries (including bruises, head and body aches, and a fractured tailbone).
The defective shower benches were sold exclusively at Costco stores and online at Costco.com for prices ranging from $80 to $90 from October 2018 through June 2021.
The company is urging affected consumers to stop using the recalled shower benches and return them to a Costco location for a full refund; Costco is apparently contacting affected consumers directly.
Although getting a full refund might sound like a great offer, injured consumers should definitely not even consider returning their defective benches to Costco for a refund. Rather, affected consumers should explore their legal options as soon as possible – they might have grounds to file a product liability lawsuit. They could even participate in a class action claim.
Common Injuries
As mentioned above, some of the consumers that were affected by the recall experienced bruises, head/body aches, and a fractured tailbone. Other potential injuries include the following: head injuries; neck injuries; back injuries; spinal cord injuries; hip injuries; knee injuries; pelvic injuries; fractures; bruises; scrapes; sprains/strains; lacerations. It is also important to remember that those who use shower benches are typically those who are unable to stand for long, whether they are elderly, have difficulty with mobility, or are recovering from an injury, for instance; therefore, incidents with the collapsing shower benches could result in even more devasting injuries.
