The Harm Associated with the Recalled Bed Rails
As explained above, the recalled bed rails represent an entrapment and asphyxiation hazard. Bed rails, in general, are intended to be used with the elderly and with those who are medically frail. These are people who might have mobility issues, at risk of falling and sustaining severe issues, etc. Unfortunately, if they become entrapped in the bed rail or between the bed rail and the mattress, they will likely be unable to get themselves out or even call for help. Entrapment, in itself, can lead to injuries, including crushing injuries, fractures, lacerations, etc. However, entrapment is also known to result in asphyxiation. Asphyxiation occurs when the body is deprived of oxygen; it can result in unconsciousness, brain damage, or death.
