On January 4, 2023, Homedics issued a recall for their Therapist Select Percussion Personal Massagers. According to the recall (number 24-076), the personal massagers can overheat while charging; this poses a fire and burn risk to consumers. The recall affects approximately 46,000 units in the U.S.
The recall specifically involves the personal massagers with model number HHP-715. They have a 120 VAC, 60 HZ power cord. The products are black and have four different massage heads. “HoMedics” is printed on the side of the product.
Products with manufacturing dates through the end of 2022 are included in the recall. The date code is printed as a 4-digit number in WWYY format on a sticker on the underside of the product’s barrel, where WW represents the week of the year and YY represents the last two digits of the year. Products with YY 20, 21, and 22 are subject to the recall.
The product was sold online at Homedics.com, Bjs.com, Lowes.com, HomeDepot.com, Amazon.com, and in-store at Macy’s, BJ’s Wholesale Club, Lowe’s, The Home Depot, JCPenney, and other stores. The products were available from September 2020 through November 2023 for approximately $100 each.
So far, the company has received 17 reports of the product overheating; this includes one report of a burn to a consumer’s thumb.
The company is urging consumers to stop using or stop charging the product and contact them for further instructions on receiving a full refund or a refund plus 20% bonus in Homedics credit.
If you or a member of your family suffered injuries because of this defective product, it is important that you do not agree to a refund. Injuries Associated with the Defective Homedics Massager
Since the personal massager can potentially overheat, it poses a fire and burn risk. Unsuspecting consumers may suffer burn injuries anywhere on their bodies (although it is more likely that they will suffer burn injuries on their hands specifically when the consumer goes to pick up the item or disconnect the item from the charger). In addition, if the overheating product starts a fire that spreads throughout the property, more severe burn injuries can occur; other injuries can also occur if the structure is compromised and starts collapsing, for example. Of course, significant property damage can occur. Regardless of the specific harm or damages resulting from an incident involving the defective product, it is important that affected consumers seek legal assistance as soon as possible.
