The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission issued a warning on August 16, 2023 for all consumers to stop using dehumidifiers that were manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances, of China. If you own one of these products, please check to see if it’s one of the dehumidifiers that were recalled on September 2013. The recall was updated on October of that year and enhanced in January 2014. The recall was re-announced by the Commission in May and November 2016.
On August 16, 2023, the CPSC issued another recall on models of Gree dehumidifiers that were not part of the original recall in 2013. We will provide you with detailed information on that recall later on in this article.
What is the Reason for the Recall on Gree Dehumidifiers?
Back in November 2016, it was announced by the CPSC that these dehumidifiers may overheat, which can cause them to smoke or ignite. So far, 4 deaths resulting from house fires have been linked to various dehumidifiers that were manufactured by Gree Electric Appliances. The first incident took place in 2016, and 3 more deaths followed in 2022.
As of the writing of this article, the CPSC is aware of more than 2,000 incidents of overheating with these units. Even more disturbing, 450 of these cases resulted in a fire, and the consumers involved sustained more than $19 million in property damage.
Based on the millions of dehumidifiers that were sold by this company, the potential for injuries and damage to property is at a scale that’s hard to imagine. More victims are likely to come forward in the upcoming days, and if you are one of these consumers, we urge you to contact us and learn about your rights and legal options. Our team or product recall lawyers will walk you through the legal process and ensure that you receive compensation for your monetary losses.

Which Models are Included in the Recall?
The most recent warning issued by the CPSC is in reference to Gree dehumidifiers sold under many different brand names, including De’Longhi, Frigidaire, Fedders, Gree, GE, Premiere, Kenmore, SoleusAir and Seabreeze. The products were sold from January 2005 through January 2014 through numerous retailers, such as Lowes, Home Depot, Kmart, Sam’s Club, Menard’s, Walmart, Amazon, and eBay. The measurements for the units are as follows: approximately 19 to 24 inches tall, 13 to 15 inches wide, and 9 to 11 inches deep.

Additional Gree Dehumidifiers Recalled on August 16, 2023
Along with the re-announcement of the recall on Gree dehumidifiers from 2013, the CPSC issued a new recall on August 16, 2023. Again, this is due to the tendency for units to overheat, thereby putting people at risk of burns and fire injuries. The most recent recall involves around 1.56 million dehumidifiers that were manufactured from January 2011 to February 2014. Models were sold under the brand names GE, Kenmore, Norpole, SoleusAir, and Seabreeze.

What Should I Do If I Own a Recalled Dehumidifier?
If you have one of these dehumidifiers in your home, turn it off immediately and unplug it from the wall. A refund if being offered by Gree Electric Appliances, which you can receive by going to greedehumidifierrecall.com and clicking on “Recall.” Or, call the manufacturer directly at (866) 853-2802 during Monday to Friday, between 8 AM and 6 PM ET. You can also go to
www.SaferProducts.gov
to report incidents of fires or burns from this product.
A refund of the purchase price is a fair solution if you are free of injuries and there was no damage to your property. However, this is not an acceptable solution to anyone that was harmed or lost a loved one to a defective Gree dehumidifier. As an injury victim or grieving family member, you may be entitled to monetary damages, such as medical expenses, funeral costs, lost income, pain and suffering, and loss of consortium.

What to Do if You are Injured by a Defective Dehumidifier
Depending on the details of your accident, you may have the right to file a personal injury claim against Gree Electric Appliances. However, a recalled product injury claim requires a solid foundation, so please make sure to take the following steps:
- Use your phone to take pictures or video of your injuries and damage to your belongings.
- Seek medical treatment immediately, as you are likely to have serious injuries. You must also have medical records as evidence for a product liability claim.
- Let the manufacturer know about the accident, but refuse to give a recorded statement or accept a refund (this can take away your right to file a lawsuit).
- Keep a collection of any evidence associated with your accident, like medical bills, property damage estimates, witness statements, and proof of lost time from work.
- Reach out to a defective product injury attorney, who can advise of your legal rights.
Filing a Lawsuit against the Manufacturer
A personal injury lawsuit is a type of legal action that allows victims to seek compensation when they have been injured from an act of negligence. What happens, though, if there is a recalled product that has caused injury to many people all over the country? Mass torts and class actions claims exist for this very purpose, which are lawsuits that are filed by many plaintiffs at the same time. With a class action, for example, you would join a “class” of other victims who suffered similar injuries from the same product.
A class action can be an efficient and powerful way to obtain justice when a defendant stands to be sued by so many people at the same time. On the other hand, the circumstances in your case may not be suitable for a class action lawsuit, meaning it would be better to file a product liability claim on your own.
Contact us right away if you have been asking yourself, “How can I join a class action lawsuit on this case?” A class action lawyer at our office will help you make an informed decision during a free case review.
