On May 26, 2021, HSN issued a recall for their Joy/JM-branded My Little Steamer and My Little Steamer Go Mini products. The recall affects approximately 5.4 million units in the U.S. alone. According to the recall, number 21-138, the clothing steamers can “expel, spray, or leak hot water during use;” without a doubt, the hazards pose a significant risk of injury to all consumers.
Both the full-size and compact-size steamers were available in a variety of colors (teal, purple, red, white, and black). The affected models have a triangular or flat steamer head with the product name printed on the side of the product.
The defective steamers were sold online and via television directly through HSN. They were also sold in-stores around the country and through other online retailers. The steamers were available for purchase from January 2002 through December 2020 for prices ranging between $10 to $50 depending if it was sold individually or as sets.
According to the recall, HSN has received at least 227 reports of hot water either spraying or leaking from the steamers. This number includes at least 106 reports of burn injuries (which includes 8 reports of second-degree burns and 6 reports of third-degree burns).

Understanding the Injuries Associated with the Defective Steamers
As mentioned above, there were hundreds of reports of burn injuries, some of which included severe burn injuries. Burns caused by hot water that leaks or sprays (as is the case with the defective steamer) are classified as thermal burns, which raise the temperature of the skin, causing skin cells to die.
Thermal burns can result in the following:
- First-degree burns (which affect only the top layer of the skin, like a sunburn)
- Second-degree burns (which affects the top layer of the skin as well as the layer underneath and can potentially scar or result in permanent discoloration of the skin)
- Third-degree burn (which affects all three layers of the skin and causes nerve damage, muscle damage, and potentially bone damage)
Regardless of the type of burn injury that you or a member of your family experienced due to the defective steamers, you should explore the legal options available to you.
What Do I Do in Case of an Injury?
If you or a member of your family suffered a burn injury because of a defecting clothes steamer, you could be eligible to file a product liability claim. There are a number of things that you could do to prepare to pursue a claim.
Consider the following recommendations:
- Take photos of all your injuries
- Take photos of the defective product
- Seek medical attention as soon as possible
- Contact the negligent company to report the incident and the harm that you suffered
- Do not agree to a refund or to return the defective product
- Do not agree to a free repair or a free replacement
- Gather all medical records
- Gather any relevant receipts of the product purchase
- Seek legal assistance with a defective product lawyer immediately
If you follow the recommended steps, you could build your injury claim with the help of a lawyer relatively quickly and efficiently. In addition, you could be eligible to participate in a class action lawsuit against the negligent product manufacturer with the assistance of a class action claim lawyer.
