A Study Regarding the Risk of Injury in Chair Pull Incidents

A study by Stuart M. McGill and Jack P. Callaghan entitled “Impact forces following the unexpected removal of a chair while sitting,” explored the severity of landing on the buttocks after a fall caused by a chair being pulled out from under someone who was trying to sit. The experiment was motivated by a personal injury case in which the victim’s chair was pulled out from under her, causing her to fall on her buttocks on the carpeted concrete floor beneath her. The study specifically explored the following: the force of the impact, whether the force of the impact could result in injury, and the most common injuries resulting from such a fall.

They used a male test dummy to explore the effects of falling while attempting to sit. The test dummy was covered with a material that simulated the skin to represent soft tissue over both the posterior thighs and buttocks. The force of the impact was measured by a force plate placed where the dummy was falling.

The experiment determined that there are several factors that can affect the extent of the injuries, including some of the following: the characteristics of the person falling; the posture of the lumbar spine at the time of impact; the point of contact; among other factors.

The study concluded that there was a significant risk of injury for those falling while attempting to sit due to a chair being pulled away from them. There was a risk of several types of injuries including posterior herniated discs, ruptured interspinous ligaments, vertebral wedge fractures, end-plate fractures, and end-plate fractures, for example.
