Depo-Provera is a brand name of a popular contraceptive injection; it is also known as the depo shot or the birth control shot. The shot is injected every 11 to 13 weeks. The injection contains progestin, which prevents ovulation from occurring. In addition, the shot thickens cervical mucus to prevent sperm from reaching an egg.
Although the Depo Provera shot has been an effective birth control method for many, the birth control has come at a great risk for women. Recently, Depo-Provera has been linked to an increased risk of brain tumors, specifically of meningioma. Studies have shown that women using the Depo-Provera shot for over one year had a 5.6-time higher risk of meningioma when compared to women who had not used the birth control shot.

A Recent Study Brings Light to the Dangers of the Depo Provera Shot
A recent study has found an increased risk of meningioma associated with the use of the popular birth control shot. The study, conducted by the French National Agency for Medicines and Health Products Safety and the French National Health Insurance, analyzed data from over 100,000 women and found that the women who had used the birth control shot for an extended length of time had a 5.6x higher risk of developing meningioma (brain tumors).
What are Meningioma Brain Tumors?
Meningiomas are a type of brain tumor that forms in the meninges; the meninges are the protective membranes that cover the brain and the spinal cord. Typically, these tumors are benign (or non-cancerous); however, because of where these tumors could be located, they can result in serious complications.
Some of the complications/symptoms that affected individuals could experience could include the following:
- Language difficulties, motor weakness, cognitive impairment, sensory loss, seizures, and other issues with neurological function
- Hydrocephalus caused by increased intracranial pressure (this could also be associated with symptoms of nausea, vision, and headaches)
- Optic nerve compression which can lead to vision loss
- Auditory nerve compression which can lead to balance issues and hearing loss
- Brainstem compression which can affect vital functions (this is a life-threatening complications)
There are different types of meningioma tumors.
Grade I Meningiomas account for about 85% of all cases. These include Angiomatous Meningioma, Fibrous (Fibroblastic) Meningioma, Lymphoplasmacyte-rich Meningioma, Meningothelial (Syncytial) Meningioma, Metaplastic Meningioma, Microcystic Meningioma, Psammomatous Meningioma, Secretory Meningioma, and Transitional (Mixed) Meningioma.
Grade II Meningiomas have a more aggressive growth rate and higher recurrence rate (meaning that, even after treatment, they are likely to reappear). These include Atypical Meningioma, Clear Cell Meningioma, And Chordoid Meningioma.
Grade III Meningiomas are the most aggressive types of tumors. They are the most likely to metastasize and recur. These include Anaplastic (Malignant) Meningioma, Rhabdoid Meningioma, And Papillary Meningioma.
Surgery to Remove Meningioma from Using Depo Provera Shot
These tumors may require surgery to be removed. However, due to their location, some tumors may be non-respectable (that is, tumors cannot be removed with surgery). In these cases, treatment may include radiation therapy or other aggressive treatments, which can result in even more complications. Without a doubt, surgery comes with risks. Affected women could suffer additional physical injuries as well as extensive psychological harm, including anxiety, depression, and more.
Can I File a Lawsuit for Brain Tumors Caused by Depo Provera Shots?
Yes – you could have the right to file a lawsuit if you developed brain tumors as a result of the Depo-Provera shot. That is, you could have the right to sue the manufacturer of the drug – which is Pfizer Inc. Your right to sue is based on drug manufacturer’s responsibility or duty to test the drug, monitor its effects, and properly warn of all the risks and effects associated with said drug. When Pfizer and other pharmaceutical companies fail to maintain these responsibilities, they could be found liable for all harm that occurs as a result of their drugs. To summarize, affected women could sue.
What is the Value of My Depo Provera Tumor Lawsuit?
This is a very important question. Of course, if you pursue a lawsuit, you could be entitled to compensation. The compensation that you could be awarded could potentially include medical expenses, lost pay, pain and suffering, punitive damages, legal costs, and more.
What could you recover? The value of these lawsuits is determined by the facts – or the details surrounding each claim. This includes the extent of the damage that occurred (the type of tumor that developed and whether it recurred after treatment), the total medical costs incurred as a result of the tumor or tumors that developed, and more. These cases can be worth upwards of $1 million.
Have there been any recent settlements? Currently, there are no public settlements associated with the Depo-Provera brain tumor lawsuits. Litigation against Pfizer is ongoing, however. Victims could be eligible to recover millions of dollars in compensation. Class action claims and mass tort claims filed on behalf of victims could result in multi-million dollar settlements.
