On June 6, 2024, SA Consumers Products issued a recall for their gun safes, specifically their Sanctuary and Sports Afield Biometric Firearm Safes. Based on recall number 24-255, the biometric lock of the affected gun safes can be opened by unauthorized users, which poses an injury risk as well as a death risk. The recall affects over 133,000 units of the gun safes.
The recall includes the Sanctuary Quick Access Biometric Home Safe, which is a one-shelf safe measuring 10in. x 14in. x 10in., and the Sports Afield Home Defense 4-Gun Biometric Safe, which is a four-shelf safe, measuring 55in. x 12in. x 11in.
The Sanctuary-brand gun safe was sold in-store and online at Costco and other stores nationwide; it had a price range of $75 to $100. The Sports Afield-branded gun safe was sold at sporting goods stores and firearm stores nationwide (in-store and online) for prices ranging from $500 to $600. Both of the gun safes were available for consumers to purchase from July 2020 through November 2023.
Reportedly, the company has received at least 77 reports of the gun safes being opened by unauthorized users; allegedly, no injuries have been reported.
The company is urging all affected consumers to stop using the biometric feature on the gun safes and use the key feature when storing firearms in the safe. The company is also offering a free repair kit.
