How To Obtain A Traffic Collision Report from the LAPD

With budget cuts becoming increasingly prevalent throughout the city, the Los Angeles Police Department police report division is experiencing increasingly large workloads.  These cutbacks have further had severe consequences for individuals attempting to obtain a police report immediately following a car accident.  Currently, the LAPD’s Records & Identification Division is indicating that wait times to receive traffic collision reports can run as long as eight weeks, if not longer.

To make matters worse, these reports cannot be delivered in-person or over the Internet.  In fact, the only way to obtain this report is through a written request to the proper division. Many clients find this task arduous and confusing, so I’ve attached a sample letter that can be used to request this report at the bottom of this page.  The LAPD also requires individuals to add a check to cover processing fees as of this writing, the amount is $24.00, but that amount is subject to change) and a self-addressed, stamped envelope.

Hopefully, the LAPD will follow the path of other jurisdictions and people to get a hold of a police report online.  Unfortunately, sending a written request is the only way to get one for now.
